Waltham student administers COVID-19 vaccines in Watertown
Community Content
MassBay Community College associate degree nursing and practical nursing students recently volunteered with the Watertown Health Department in administering COVID-19 vaccinations, including Aushiana Perryman of Waltham.
Fifteen ADN students and 11 PN students assisted with vaccine administration and with the registration process for hundreds of residents who received their COVID-19 vaccine.
“Nursing students are needed to administer vaccines and provide vaccine education in our communities,” said MassBay director of nursing Andrea Bresnahan. “Being part of the COVID-19 vaccination effort is a rare opportunity for students to directly learn about population health, participate in public health program, gain clinical experience and ultimately save lives.”

It was the most thrilling thing that had ever existed on a playground, before or since. In the words of Canadian history writer Anita May Draper, “those who’ve taken a spin on this ride agree it’s the most exciting one of all.” Denver Post columnist Jack Kisling once eulogized the apparatus as “mad fun.” When Iowa’s Quad-City Times canvassed its older readers for memories of the thing in 1991, they received a torrent of positive mail, with one woman even citing it as evidence that growing up during the Great Depression was “more fun.”
But it came at a ghastly cost: cracked skulls, shattered limbs, horrific lacerations and dead or permanently maimed children. In an age of radium toothpaste, lead-paint baby toys and decorating Christmas trees with asbestos, even this pleasure was deemed too dangerous for the world’s children. This is the forgotten story of the giant stride, the most notorious piece of playground equipment in history.

When it comes to troubleshooting for her childrenâs remote learning, it seems like Barbara Lopez has done it all.
Depending on the day, the Miami mom could be supervising just two of her young children as they log into their virtual classroomsâor she could be helping all four. Sheâs handled Zoom breakdowns, juggled multiple parent support group chats and gotten her kids fed during their four different lunch times. And sheâs done it all while working from home part time as a university lecturer (her husband works remotely full time).
Varied as her days may be, one thing is constant: Her presence by the side of her youngest son, 8-year-old Logan, during class time. Logan has cortical visual impairmentâa neurological conditionâalong with additional special needs, and Lopez stands in for the professionals who would be helping him in the classroom during a typical school year.
