Remaining migrant families released from Berks County detention center, Sen. Casey says Updated Feb 28, 2021; U.S. Senator Bob Casey said Sunday that the last of the undocumented migrant children and their families were released during the past several days from the Berks County Residential Center Casey’s office said an ICE official told them those migrant families were released from the detention center around 1 p.m. Friday, according to several news reports. No one is saying why they were released, those reports said, although it culminates a year-long effort to free them. The building, owned by Berks County, has been the scene of numerous protests in previous years demanding that the families be released.

Bob Casey (R-Pa.) said no one is living at the Berks County Residential Center near Reading.An Immigration and Customs Enforcement official told Casey the remaining families were released Friday afternoon. This is a long overdue step to deliver justice to vulnerable migrant families, including children, Casey said in a tweet. The next step is to permanently close the center so that no future family or child is forced to go through what these families have endured. The facility is owned by the county and was contracted by the federal government to house immigrant families seeking asylum in the U.S.
