Part of Interstate 40 in the Albuquerque area has been closed for hours due to a fatal crash early Sunday morning.
Sgt. Tanner Tixier, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said officers were dispatched to westbound I-40 at San Mateo.
“Upon arrival they discovered that a passenger vehicle was traveling the wrong direction on the freeway and struck a semi-truck,” Tixier said. “The wrong way driver was pronounced deceased on scene.”
Officials in New Mexico’s largest city said Friday they have cleared a backlog of thousands of untested rape evidence kits as part of an endeavor that has spanned more than three years.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Authorities have identified the victims of a double homicide involving a car chase in metro Albuquerque.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said one of the victims was 22-year-old Anthony Vigil and that the other was a 15-year-old boy. The boy s name was not released.
Both were found dead April 19 with apparent gunshot wounds following a roll-over crash in a dark-colored sedan.
According to the Sheriff s Office, witnesses reported seeing a white sedan occupied by two or three people chasing the other car and also observing shots being fired at the vehicle that crashed in southwest Albuquerque.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Two people were killed when a wrong-way driver crashed into a vehicle on I-25 near Tramay, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff s Office.
The crash was reported around 2 a.m.
BCSO said the southbound lanes near exit 270 will remain closed for some time.
