It’s looking increasingly likely that Gennadiy Golovkin’s next title defense will see him take on former super welterweight champ Jaime Munguia. Zanfer’s Fernando Beltran told ESPN yesterday that the fight, which is currently in the negotiation stage, was “very possible,” while Oscar De La Hoya calls the talks “promising.”
I’m having promising talks with team GGG for the best fight in boxing. #GGGMunguia2021 both fighters interested and willing. @GGGBoxing@jaimemunguia15 Oscar De La Hoya (@OscarDeLaHoya) December 31, 2020
I’m just going to ignore that “best fight in boxing” bit. Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO) is past his prime, but Munguia’s (36-0, 29 KO) yet to face anyone even near his caliber.
