Kevin Glawe
Kevin “Smilie” Gene Glawe was born on March 1, 1952, in Detroit Lakes, MN. He passed away on April 23, 2021, from a rare high-grade lymphoma (blood cancer). Hospice of the Red River Valley at the Perham Living Transitions unit provided excellent care and support during his final days.
Kevin was the son of Dale William Glawe and Vernice Mae (Dullum) Glawe. He was baptized on April 13, 1952, and confirmed on April 3, 1966, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vergas, MN. Smilie grew up on a small family farm outside of Vergas. He attended country school in District #166 in Hobart Township from first through fifth grades, where he met three of his lifelong friends: Duane Antonsen, JoAnn Bruhn, and Diane (Schultz) Menz. He graduated from Perham High School in 1970. He was the wrestling manager in 1967 then wrestled in the 165-weight class his senior year and played football and baseball in school.

Join the Walk for Development
On May 8 and 9, 1971, more than 1 million people planned a walk to raise money for underdeveloped areas through the International Walk for Development. Around 350 communities decided to participate. A walker would find a sponsor who would pay between 10 cents and $20 for every mile walked and 15% of the raised funds went to the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation.
Grand Opening
The Northern Mart on Highway 59 South in Detroit Lakes had its grand opening starting Thursday, April 29, through Saturday May 1. They gave out free coffee and donuts.
In-person Perham High School prom scheduled for Saturday

Prom is on for this year with Perham High School. Principal Ehren Zimmerman says the event will be in-person, and he has his fingers crossed for nothing to change. The prom s theme is A Night in Paris, and it s scheduled the evening of Saturday, April 24.
Perham High School will be livestreaming the event with Magnitude Sports, who they re contracted with. Links to the stream can be found on Facebook and a pop-up on the website.

Since Otter Tail County began pursuing criminal charges in cases of welfare fraud last year, it has referred 11 cases to law enforcement and three people are facing charges, Otter Tail County commissioners heard during their Tuesday, April 13 meeting.
“We had not been doing that for quite some time,” said county collections officer Crystal Herman. “Some of these crimes are pretty egregious. We’re talking huge dollars, we’re talking misinformation intentionally given to the agency over many years so we felt there was a need to start pursuing those criminally again.”
Study of bacteria growth on masks among winning topics for Perham students at Minnesota science fair

Perham High School senior Elayna Kawlewski tested the growth of three different types of bacteria on four different types of masks for the 2021 Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair. While Kawlewski needs to run trials with a bigger population, she was still able to draw some conclusions.
