The Transport Secretary said on Twitter: Following yesterday s removal of permission for Belavia to operate to/from the UK, I m now taking further action. With immediate effect, Belarusian airlines will be prevented from entering UK airspace unless specifically authorised.
A plane carrying about 170 people from 12 countries - including reporter Roman Protasevich - was forced to land so that armed guards could arrest him.
Mr Martin said it was “piracy in the skies” and reflects a growing authoritarianism across the world.
Belarus state media said the aircraft – which was travelling from Athens in Greece to Lithuanian capital Vilnius – was switched to Minsk following an alleged bomb threat.
Authorities in Minsk arrested activist and blogger Roman Protasevich.
“Certainly it was a state-sponsored coercive act,” Mr Martin said.
The forced landing of a passenger plane in Belarus today to detain a journalist is absolutely unacceptable.
These unprecedented actions have caused widespread concern across the EU – and they must be addressed at tomorrow’s #EUCO
The Taoiseach said forcing the plane to land in Belarus to arrest the journalist was “unacceptable”.

Roman Protasevich, 26, is a dissident journalist who also blogs about Belarus.
He has annoyed Europe s last dictator , Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, for daring to speak out against him.
Protasevich fled Belarus for Poland in 2019 due to pressure from the authorities, says Media Solidarity, a group that supports Belarusian journalists.
