Simultaneous Motorcades Held Across the Country
Last week Wednesday, the teachers from the Stann Creek District were the first to organize their motorcade in protest of the proposed salary cut and increment freeze. Today, they hit the streets of Dangriga again as part of the national action plan of the Belize National Teachers Union. Also in the far south, in Punta Gorda, vehicles lined the principal streets of the town for almost a mile as they are sending a clear message to the government that they won’t accept its initial proposal to rebound the economy. Wearing their green shirts and honking their vehicle horns, the teachers joined in the display of solidarity.

Teechaz Gat Yu Bak! B.N.T.U. Sends Message to G.O.B.
The first of a string of activities by the Belize National Teachers Union was held simultaneously today across the country. Members of the union rallied together in motorcades to sound their discontent with a government proposed salary cut and increment freeze. The teachers are not backing down and will continue with a plan of action leading up to the budget presentation on March twenty-sixth. News Five’s Duane Moody reports from the streets of Belize City.

At nine-thirty on the dot, the motorcade began. Police confirm that up to ninety vehicles packed with teachers, who are members of the Belize National Teachers Union, traversed through the principal streets of Belize City sending a strong message to the government – teachers do not accept its proposed plan to save on public service salaries and increments.

Budget Consultations Continue, G.O.B. Meets with B.N.T.U.
The government continued budget consultations today, preparing for the presentation of the budget in March. Today, a team of high-level ministers met with the Belize National Teachers Union. Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde and Ministers Francis Fonseca and Henry Charles Usher sat down with B.N.T.U. National President Senator Elena Smith and members of the executive. The government made presentations regarding the state of the nation’s economy. It has been a continuous declaration of the new administration that the country is in a financial chokehold. This evening the government released an Analysis of the State of the Nation’s Economy. The report states that Belize’s unemployment rate is more than triple the average unemployment rate throughout the Caribbean and more than quadruple that of Central America; that government revenues fell by almost thirty percent or over three hundred millio
