To our readers, Garden Club holds annual Plant Sale June 5 May 20, 2021 Belfast The Belfast Garden Club’s Plant Sale is back! It will take place Saturday, June 5 (rain date is June 6), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Belfast Boathouse lawn at 34 Commercial St. Tables will be well spaced and the number of people allowed in at one time to shop will be monitored. The Plant Sale includes Maine-grown perennials, annuals and vegetable plants, as well as gardening tools, decorative items and books. This year there will be sections for house and native plants, as well as a raffle for a spectacular 40-year-old Christmas cactus. Many local nurseries donated plants, and club members and other local gardeners have donated plants and gardening-related items.

Many local nurseries donate plants each year, but the garden club also counts on donations of divided perennials, seedlings, gardening books, and gardening tools from members and the general public. Therefore, they are putting out a public request for donations. “Garden club members are willing to dig and divide your overgrown plants a couple of weeks before the sale if you would like to contribute them,” said the Club, in a news release.

Slegona will discuss the mysteries of the North American migration of Monarch butterflies and what they need to survive as a species. She will describe the life cycle and behaviors of each metamorphic stage, review current and future research, and explain the risks predators and disease pose to Monarchs.
