Helping others now and throughout the year | News, Sports, Jobs

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as helping other people. I’ve learned this in a variety of ways over the years. From the grin that was always on my dad’s face when he dropped change or maybe a dollar bill into one of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettles at Christmastime to the joy I have seen on the faces of those granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, evidence of that satisfaction has presented itself to me time and time again. Earlier this month, I had the chance to do a bit of helping others myself. On Dec. 5, I climbed aboard a city of Wheeling Operations Department bucket truck and was hoisted high above the parking lot at the Ohio Valley Mall. I was there to help attract attention to Operation Toy Lift, a toy drive hosted by the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department, Wheeling Police Department and United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley.

MARTINS FERRY City workers tackled the first big snowstorm of the year and did a great job, said Mayor John Davies. Davies said his initial plan to only have so many plows and salt trucks out in one shift, but when the snow started piling up on Wednesday he was forced to have more go out at one time. The city’s priorities are its hills and with most of the city’s homes built on hillsides, there are plenty to keep clear during a storm.

Belmont County kids set to Shop with a Deputy Saturday | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE The COVID-19 pandemic is altering nearly every holiday event, but it has not reduced the community’s generosity. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department will hold its yearly Shop with a Deputy event at the St. Clairsville Walmart. This year’s event will be held in memory of former sheriff Tom McCort, who died in April. He served 20 years as Belmont County’s sheriff, from 1984-2004. Sheriff David Lucas said it is important to go forward with holiday giving. “(W)e didn’t want to not have it this year, because this year we are helping 69 kids in the Ohio Valley,” he said.
