The Pella Police Department is hosting another round of the Citizens Public Safety Academy beginning in May. The nine-week program incorporates components from the Pella Police Department, as well as the Pella Fire Department and Pella Community Ambulance. This class is free to attend. The Citizens Public Safety Academy will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6 P.M. beginning May 12th and going to July 7th. Despite challenges posed by COVID-19, staff and volunteers with Pella Community Ambulance are responding faster than ever. Director Greg Higginbotham says strong response to local EMT classes and a focused effort to add personnel has ambulances leaving their bays faster than the state average. Higginbotham says he’s thankful for the way EMTs and paramedics have been working efficiently despite the uptick in calls due to COVID-19 this past fall and the calls they receive after major snow events and during the colder months of the year. Pella Community Ambulance reports service call numbers were down in 2020 from 2019. Director Greg Higginbotham says they assisted at 1,739 incidents last year, down from 1,825 the previous year, a drop that was largely attributed due to closures in the spring related to COVID-19.
However, Higginbotham says they were extremely busy with calls related to the virus this fall, especially in November, during the large surge across the state. Higginbotham says despite those challenges, the Pella Community Ambulance call response time dropped below the state average for the first time ever.
