Michigan coronavirus surge penetrates prisons, but there are signs of progress

Inside the tight confines of prison, disease has fertile ground to fester.
Statewide, Michigan is reporting some of the highest new coronavirus numbers since December, and the prison system has again been hit hard, but is showing signs of improvement as statewide inmate vaccination efforts near completion.
Approaching 80% of nearly 33,000 inmates at some point during the pandemic have tested positive, according to data available on the Michigan Department of Corrections case tracking website.

Michigan added 8,015 new cases and 30 deaths Wednesday as the state continues to lead the nation in new cases by population.
The latest figures bring the state s total number of cases to 715,478 and deaths to 16,327 since the virus was first detected in March 2020, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
The state s 471 cases per 100,000 people leads the nation, surpassing New Jersey at 335 cases per 100,000 people and New York City at 307
cases per 100,000 people, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
On Wednesday, Whitmer said she is increasing the state s goal from 50,000 shots administered per day to 100,000 shots per day.

The latest figures bring the state s total number of cases to 707,463 and deaths to 16,297 since the virus was first detected in March 2020, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
Hospitalizations for confirmed cases of COVID-19 are now increasing at a faster rate than before Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shuttered indoor dining and suspended in-person high school classes in the fall.
The state s 452.5 cases per 100,000 people leads the nation, surpassing New Jersey at 351.9 cases per 100,000 people and New York City at 325.8 cases per 100,000 people, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Michigan adds 8,413 cases, 57 deaths from COVID-19

Michigan on Saturday added 8,413 new COVID-19 cases, and 57 deaths, and posted the sixth weekly case increase in a row.
The latest figures bring the state s total number of deaths to 16,218 and cases to 692,206 since the virus reached Michigan in March 2020, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
This week the state added 39,637 cases and 192 deaths from the virus. The deaths announced Saturday included 51 identified during a vital records review.
It was the highest weekly case total since Nov. 29-Dec. 5, when 45,015 new cases were reported.
Last week, the state recorded 27,758 new cases and 129 deaths. At the end of November, the state established the weekly record of 50,892 cases.
