ISLAMABAD: The government confirmed on Thursday that power sector’s circular debt went past Rs2.306 trillion as of Nov 30, 2020, up by Rs156 billion over the first five months of the current fiscal year, at a rate of Rs31.2bn per month.
With this on the table, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) presided over by Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar was also informed by the Ministry of Information Technology that a meterless smart metering system successfully tested and proved on ground was not being adopted by power distribution companies.
The meeting was told that a bulk share of the increase in circular debt was poor governance in the public sector itself. It was noted that Rs156bn addition in circular debt included non-payment of budgeted and unbudgeted subsidy, delayed payments on account of interest to independent power producers (IPPs), other mark-ups, pending price adjustment on account of quarterly and monthly adjustments and non-paymen
Woman electrocuted as live wire falls on house

TANK: A woman was electrocuted and the house partially burnt when a live electricity wire fell on her abode in Qutab Colony in Tank district on Wednesday.
Locals said that an electricity live wire of a high transmission line broke and fell on a gas pipeline in the house that caused a huge inferno. The woman in the house, who was the wife of Sher Jan Mahsud, tried to turn off the gas valve but unluckily she electrocuted in her attempt.
The locals said that the owner of the house Sher Jan Mahsud was a poor vendor selling vegetables on his pushcart. They appealed to high-ups of Wapda and Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) to compensate the man.

TAKHTBHAI: The traders and elders of Takhtbhai and adjoining towns and villages on Sunday threatened to launch a protest movement against the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) if it did not end unscheduled electricity loadshedding in their areas.
Talking to media, social and political figures, including Ali Rahman, head of Youth Parliament Muhammad Siddique, Tehrik-e-Tahaffuz-e-Takhtbhai chairman Abdus Sattar Tajik, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam activist Maulana Ishtiaq Haqqani and leaders of traders’ unions Sher Mama, Habibul Nijat and Lal Gul Yousafzai said that they were experiencing worst kind of power loadshedding in their areas. They said that frequent power outages for hours had made life miserable for the locals.
