PHOENIX Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation to honor WWII internment camp survivor Fred Korematsu and his tireless commitment to equal justice under the law.
Senate Bill (SB) 1800 calls for the observance of “Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution” each year on January 30. It was sponsored by Senator Sonny Borrelli and passed unanimously in both legislative chambers.
“Fred Korematsu’s bravery and dedication to gaining justice for himself and others is admirable, and reflects the character of our nation,” said Governor Ducey. “The American internment camps established in the 1940s are a scar in U.S. history, and I’m proud to honor those who spoke out against them and fought for justice.”
Carolina is celebrating Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month this April with several campus-wide events, including panels, performances and the creation of a cookbook.
The celebration is spearheaded by the UNC Asian American Center, which was founded in 2020 and whose mission is to cultivate a critical understanding of Asian American peoples, cultures and histories. Through education, organizing and advocacy, the center engages and empowers Asian American students, faculty and staff.
The monthlong celebration aims to do just that.
“Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to highlight the diverse histories and cultures of this large and understudied community,” said Heidi Kim, the director of the UNC Asian American Center and an associate professor in the English and comparative literature department in the College of Arts & Sciences. “It’s an especially important celebration this year in the wake of tragedy. Events will celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, executive director of the Asian American Advocacy Fund, will serve as the keynote speaker at UNG for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. The event is available via Zoom at noon April 7.
The University of North Georgia (UNG) will welcome a keynote speaker and host a panel of students, faculty and staff in a pair of events to mark Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
Though the month is designated nationally for May, UNG will host the events in April while spring semester classes still are in session.
The event featuring UNG community members sharing their experience as Asian Americans will be held the week of April 19 via Zoom. Details will be announced in the near future.
