SAN FRANCISCO - Asian Pacific American Heritage month started in May of 1978 but, Bay Area AAPI community leaders say this year may be one of the most important celebrations.
This month as a time of celebration has existed for over 30 years but this is a year like no other, said California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the first Filipino American to hold this post. This is a really important month where we can rally support, build bridges, strengthen relationships to attack those forces of hate which are so harmful and so painful right now.

It recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the country. One South Florida woman is sharing her familyâs story and how she has helped many local young women achieve success.
The black and white picture depicts a Chinese couple who came to the U.S, Lee and Tooey Yee. The baby in the picture is Shirley Koo, who now lives in Palm Beach Gardens. Her father came to America around the 1940âs.
More than 100 hundred years later in 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the first presidential proclamation for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1992, Congress passed an amendment that called on the people of the U.S. to observe Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month with “appropriate ceremonies, programs and activities.”
Since then, those who have origins in Asia and the Pacific Islands specially the East, Southeast, the Indian subcontinent, Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia have used the month to amplify their voices and their pride.
But AAPI Heritage Month is not just for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders it s a celebration that every American can partake in. Since many AAPI individuals have been taught to assimilate, it can be difficult for some to take pride in their cultures and truly embrace their identities. In fact, Chan was on his way to visit Lin Thursday when he himself was attacked from behind. This guy, you know, calling me names and stuff, and then hit me in the back, Chan said.
Chan managed to get a picture of the man. That picture led to the alleged suspect’s arrest, after Chan was able to point him out to police.
