This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, as I approach the age my mother was when she immigrated to the U.S., I ve found myself thinking that our proverbial melting pot is more like a boiling pot: uncomfortable for too many.
When my mother, Zongmin, immigrated to the U.S. in 1988, she was leaving behind a life of accomplishment in the face of great oppression. She d survived China s Cultural Revolution, persevered through the shutdown of the national education system and emerged as one of the first female doctors a radiologist in her province. She was not only a survivor, but a healer.
