D65 celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May 13, 2021
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month throughout the month of May “in solidarity” with AAPI community members, according to a Friday newsletter.
“There is certainly an increased need for continued learning, discussion, and action after an alarming rise in violence and hateful attacks directed at Asian Americans and immigrants since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,” District 65 superintendent Devon Horton said.
The district will take steps to become an anti-racist institution, Horton said, which includes teaching about diverse identities and accomplishments throughout class curriculums and across the school year.

MONTCLAIR School officials have apologized for an email that singled out the nationalist radical Rabbi Meir Kahane, a convicted terrorist, for notice during Jewish Heritage week.
On Monday, high school parents, students and teachers received a Daily Announcement email offering background on Kahane, along with links for other monthly observances such as Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month.
The email highlighted Kahane s founding of the Jewish Defense League, which has been classified by the FBI as a right-wing terrorist group. He was assassinated in 1990 and his followers have been banned from Israeli politics.

Q: Why is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrated in May?
A: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the first joint congressional resolution to celebrate the cultural, social and economic contributions of Asian Pacific Americans from May 4 to 11.
The dates were chosen to mark two important anniversaries in Asian American history. On May 7, 1843, the first immigrants from Japan arrived in the United States and on May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad was finished.
Major work on the railroad was completed by newcomers from China.
President George H.W. Bush extended the observance for the entire month of May.
