(Staff photo) Print While efforts continue at the state legislative level to mandate that free transitional kindergarten is available for all four-year-olds, a local effort for transitional kindergarten is building in North County San Diego. Community member Allison Trent requested the item be placed on the board agendas at Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff and Encinitas school districts, all local districts where they do not offer transitional kindergarten (TK). All districts complied with agenda items in April with recommendations from staff to not offer TK at this time as they do not receive state funding to offer the extra year of public school.

Last November, Hsu started 92130 Cares as a way to connect local families who had fallen on hard times due to the pandemic with other local families who were in the position to help, right in her own neighborhood. She was on a mission to create community connection through acts of kindness and neighborly love.

Solana Beach School District again moves ahead with by-trustee area elections

Print The Solana Beach School District has resumed its efforts to transition to by-trustee area for elections, a conversion that was disrupted by the pandemic. Under the new election system, the district would be divided into five geographic areas and one board member living in each area would be elected by the voters who live in that area, rather than the current method of at-large elections. Solana Beach School District aims to have by-trustee elections with its new five-area map in 2022. (Courtesy) The board selected its new map last February and it was meant to be used in the November 2020 election before the process was delayed. The process picked up where it left off on April 21, when the San Diego County Committee on School District Organization held a public hearing on the proposed map. Action is expected to be taken at a future San Diego County Board of Education meeting the board next meets on May 12.
