The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will discuss challenges and opportunities related to overall port congestion, with a special emphasis on agricultural exports, at its meeting this week.
The Board will hear from port officials and agricultural stakeholders as well as trucking, maritime and retail industry representatives. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. via GoToWebinar.
“As we continue to experience congestion and delays at California ports, we need to look at collaborative solutions, ” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “All parties, including agriculture, port authorities, shipping lines, trucking companies and others share a commitment to expand trade by moving products efficiently and effectively through a robust goods movement infrastructure. Collectively, I believe that we can find short and long term opportunities to improve freight transportation.”

The Oakland A’s proposed 35,000-seat waterfront ballpark and accompanying mixed-use development is expected to cost at least $12 billion to build and inject nearly $1 billion into city coffers, according to documents released Friday.
In addition to the ballpark, the project includes 3,000 units of housing, 1.5 million square feet of offices and 270,000 square feet of retail space in Jack London Square.
The ballpark alone, which would be located at Howard Terminal, will cost more than $1 billion. The overall development is expected to inject $955 million into the city s general fund and generate $450 million in community benefits, if the project is approved and built.

The East Oakland Stadium Alliance (EOSA) hosted a community meeting on Wednesday to educate and engage West Oakland residents on the impacts of the Oakland Athletics’ proposed ballpark stadium and luxury condo and office development at Howard Terminal on Market Street, in the heart of the industrial working port.
After over a year-long delay, the City issued a Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the project at the end of February. The DEIR identifies a number of significant and unavoidable impacts that the project will have on the local environment, such as air quality, noise, and transportation hazards. With only 60 days to review a very technical and complex, 6,000-page document, West Oakland stakeholders and industry leaders came together during an open forum to discuss the project, review the DEIR process, and answer community members’ questions.

“I believe that our Harbor Department is well equipped and experienced to handle leases and development on the piers,” said Councilwoman Cindy Allen, whose district includes the historic ship. “I also trust our locally appointed harbor commissioners to represent our communities’ best interests.”
Allen and two other council members requested the discussion, but many questions remain about the proposal including the reason behind the plan to shift control of Pier H back to the port.
The Harbor Commission oversaw the area around the ship nearly 30 years ago, but the city assumed control in 1992 in order to develop the area as a tourist attraction.
