Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) Australia’s 2020 Pacific Islands Export Survey revealed that freight costs are one of the top three barriers to export faced by Pacific businesses, which was further exacerbated when COVID-19 drastically affected shipping routes and thus inflated costs.
To support Pacific exporters in the wake of COVID-19, PTI Australia launched the COVID-19 Freight Assistance Package in late 2020 and has now seen over 30 successful applicants receive the monetary grant.

The Pacific Trade Invest New Zealand has established a mentorship program for regional exporters to New Zealand in an effort to improve their businesses and exports to New Zealand.
PTI New Zealand Trade Commissioner Glynis Miller said the pilot program was launched last year to enable local exporters gain expert advice on New Zealand’s trade requirements and potential buyers from various sectors including agriculture.
“For Pacific Trade Invest we represent 16 Pacific Island Countries and we have in access of 1400 clients across the Pacific and out of those we have about 120 A Class clients who are our large scale exporters,” she said.

Closer engagements between the Pacific Trade Invest New Zealand (PTI NZ) and the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Program (PHAMA Plus) will enable both organisations to better understand markets for Pacific products in New Zealand and support producers, exporters, importers and consumers to facilitate trade of agricultural products.
A joint statement from PHAMA Plus and PTI NZ said they were working with businesses in the root crop sectors of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu to identify opportunities.
