Industry group calls for modernised laws to counter alcohol abuse

iStock image A group representing alcohol industry stakeholders in Jamaica is calling for the laws governing the use of their products to be modernised and for better policing of unauthorised alcohol use at events, among other recommendations to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol use. The group says banning advertising and increased taxation of alcoholic products will only increase their illicit and harmful use, as has happened in other countries.  The report entitled “Approach to reduce alcohol misuse” from the Jamaica Beer, Wine and Spirits Network (JBWSN) recommends among other things “the promotion of education on responsible consumption, and the promotion of zero alcohol consumption by minors, pregnant females and persons with alcohol use disorders and other medical conditions”.
