In a fiery debate on Tuesday night, Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard used the legal protection of parliamentary privilege to tell Parliament a man he falsely accused of being a rapist was actually guilty of sexual assault. Mallard has been under pressure from the National Party which has been calling for his resignation since he concluded a taxpayer-funded settlement after suggesting a worker at Parliament was a rapist. The case dates back to events that took place in 2019 around the release of the Francis Review into workplace culture at Parliament.
