Deputy Speaker and Cebu Rep. Pablo John Garcia said there is no “compelling reason” to change the airport’s name as he pointed out that this move would only “erase more than 50 years of history of the airport.”
Garcia called on the House Committee on Transportation to also consider the position of other provincial leaders, more in particular officials of the provincial government now headed by his sister, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
However, Garcia is facing a formidable force of supporters of the measure that includes Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, who co-authored one of the pending bills.
Ex-ConCom member Monsod warns of potential corruption if economic Charter amendments push through By DONA MAGSINO, GMA News
Published January 27, 2021 1:59pm Inserting a simple phrase in the 1987 Constitution to amend the so-called restrictive economic provisions may open the gates of corruption in Congress, lawyer and former Constitutional Commission member Christian Monsod said Wednesday. During a hearing of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Laws, Monsod said Resolution of Both Houses No. 2 was motivated by thirst for power and money. RBH 2 is dangerous and devious because it is a wholesale transfer of power from the Constitution to the Congress in determining the limitations of foreign ownership of land, natural resources, public utility, media, advertising, education and institutions, said Monsod, who is also a former Comelec chairperson.

Published January 26, 2021 2:04pm Capiz Representative Fredenil Castro on Tuesday urged the House Committee on Constitutional Amendments to bring the deliberations on the economic Charter change straight to the plenary to save lawmakers some time in the discussions. During the continuation of the panel deliberations, Castro suggested that the committee already terminate its hearings and vote on Speaker Lord Allan Velasco s Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No. 2, which proposes amendments to the restrictive economic provisions in the 1987 Constitution. He argued the panel is pressed for time and the questions that lawmakers would want to propound in the committee hearings can also be asked in the plenary.

Herrera added to the list of House leaders who were convinced that there is time for Congress to carry out the economic Charter change.
“Kilala nyo naman kami sa Kongreso kung kailangang naming ipasa, ipapasa namin. (You know us in Congress, if we need to pass a law, we will pass it) You’ve seen us how we worked till the wee hours of the morning on a number of occasions to ensure that we pass the national budget,” she said in a radio interview.
“Nagagawa naman namin na magpasa ng batas kung kinakailangan kaya hindi ko sya nakikita na imposible pagdating sa pagbabago ng economic provision ng Konstitusyon.”
