Republican lawmakers in Kansas voted to end Gov. Laura Kelly’s short-lived statewide coronavirus mask mandate extension last week under a new law that allows legislators to repeal the governor’s executive orders, according to reports.
The governor, a Democrat, had prolonged the mandate through May 28 but the state s Legislative Coordinating Council voted 5-2 along party lines to cancel it just hours later in a party line, the Kansas City Star reported.
The mandate has been in place off and on since last summer.

TOPEKA, Kan. Kansas’s statewide mask mandate, already an exemption-filled patchwork, came to an end Thursday, canceled by top Republican lawmakers under a new law that makes it more difficult for health officials to keep COVID-19 precautions in place.
A group of leading legislators, known as the Legislative Coordinating Council, voted 5-2 along party lines to overturn Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s mask mandate hours after she reissued it to fulfill the requirements of the new law. One member of the eight person panel, embattled Senate Majority Leader Gene Suellentrop, was absent for the vote conducted over video conference.

UPDATE: Kansas legislative leaders have voted to revoke Governor Kelly’s new mask mandate for the state. The Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council voted 5 to 2 to revoke the order. Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman of Olathe, Majority Leader Dan Hawkins of Wichita, and Speaker Pro Tem Blaine Finch of Ottawa issued a joint statement:
“Public health mandates should be short-term, data-driven and reserved only for pressing emergency situations. They should not be used to dictate Kansans’ daily lives year after year. If data is the real driver behind the Governor’s approach, then let’s rely on the numbers. In November, the Governor issued her last statewide mask mandate saying there was a “worrying spike” in cases. At that time, Kansas had 5,217 new cases and a 7-day average of 2,430 new cases. Now,
