Coronavirus Moves 2021 Acura Grand Prix Of Long Beach From April To September

Typically the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of the early events on the NTT IndyCar schedule. But it will be the season finale in 2021, it was announced last Thursday, Dec. 17, by the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. The coronavirus pandemic wiped out the 2020 race. The 2021 Grand Prix had been set for April 16-18, but was in doubt because of the continuing coronavirus pandemic. Now the race will be Sept. 24-26. According to Jim Michaelian, CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, this is the best-case scenario because it could result in full fan participation.

(Photo courtesy of INDYCAR) Concerns over the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in California have prompted INDYCAR officials to proactively reschedule the 2021 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Originally booked for Sunday, April 18, as Race No. 3 of the 17-event NTT IndyCar Series schedule, America’s longest-running street race now will be run as the season-ender on Sept. 26. The move will create a three-race/three-weekend “West Coast Swing” to complete the championship. Beginning at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway on Sunday, Sept. 12, the homestretch will continue at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., on Sunday, Sept. 19, before finishing on the historic streets of Long Beach.
