BLACKWOOD, ABACO Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr Hubert Minnis on Friday said $11 million has been spent and hundreds of homeowners assisted so far under the Disaster Reconstruction Authority’s (DRA) Small Home Repairs Program for Grand Bahama and Abaco residents impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

Minnis was speaking at a handover ceremony of “Bahama House” to Blackwood resident Esther Ann Cornish Laing, who lost her home in September 2019 during Category 5 Hurricane Dorian.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The government is working on its Resilient Recovery Policy, which will provide context and guidelines for a timely rebuilding process after a disaster, according to Minister of State for the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction Iram Lewis.
Lewis, who was addressing the Canada-Bahamas Virtual Business Mission “Climate Resiliency and Reconstruction” yesterday, said; “The purpose of the Resilient Recovery Policy is to provide context and guidelines for recovery planning and operations that are timely, efficient and facilitate a pathway to resilient development.

PRIME Minister Dr Hubert Minnis participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a $1.8m community centre and hurricane shelter in Central Pines, Abaco, yesterday which he said will be capable of accommodating 800 people during a hurricane.
“The Disaster Reconstruction Authority in partnership with The Bahamas Hope Foundation, Sol Relief, and Ernst and Young is set to build the Abaco centre,” he said. “This facility will serve as a high-performance community centre and storm shelter in Central Pines, Abaco.”
Dr Minnis said he expects the completion of the centre in May 2021, before the beginning of the next hurricane season.
