While commending the government for increasing the budget allocation to early childhood development (ECD) from K803 million in the 2019/2020 budget to K3 billion in the 2020/2021 budget, WaterAid Malawi contends that the allocation still falls short of the MGDS III’s recommended K4.9 billion allocation.
In a statement, WaterAid’s coordinator for policy & sector engagement, Lloyd Mtalimanja says this is especially concerning in that “although Government surpassed the MGDS III’s target for budget allocation to the Education & Skills Development sector by about 75% in the 2020/2021 budget, it still underfunded ECD”.
“This suggests that ECD is not adequately prioritized in budget allocations. Regrettably the 2019/20 ECD budget estimate also fell short of the minimum recommended expenditure on ECD proposed in the MGDS III by MK3.5 billion (81%),” Mtalimanja said.

11,000 refugee households assisted with food and cash distributions
Strategic Outcome 1
Refugees: 11,000 refugee households received double distributions of Corn Soya Blend (CSB) and cash-based transfers for the food basket (comprising of cereal, pulses and oil) for the months of March and April. From May, distributions will be conducted monthly, owing to the consistently low number cases of COVID-19 over the past two months.
Furthermore, 5,000 households are receiving debit cards from WFP’s financial service provider MyBucks to use to access their cash transfers as e-payments.
COVID-19 Cash Response: Thanks to support from the Government of Norway, from December 2020 to March 2021, WFP provided cash assistance to 12,000 households in seven bomas in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19 on urban areas.
Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) President, Innocent Majiya, has described the National Response Team (NRT) training which the organization conducted for its staff and other stakeholders, as important saying it will help in punctual disaster management and humanitarian response.
Majiya was speaking in Mchinji on Tuesday, during the closing of a seven day National Response Team Training for the Red Cross volunteers staff, and other stakeholders drawn from all the districts.
âAs per its mandate MRCS continues to be a key partner of the Malawi Government in responding to emergencies. It is from this background that the NRT training drilled the participants with a multi-sectoral approach to handling emergencies.”
