New charges filed against couple in connection to Emma Cole s case

Delaware News Journal For more than a year, Brandon and Kristie Haas deprived the toddler under their care of sufficient food and medical care and subjected her to inappropriate physical discipline, according to prosecutors. The remains of 3-year-old Emma Cole were found Sept. 13, 2019, by a person walking their dog at the Little Lass softball fields in Smyrna. The Delaware Department of Justice this week indicted Brandon and Kristie Haas, Emma s stepfather and mother, on first-degree child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child charges. Kristie Haas also was indicted on charges of abusing a corpse and reckless burning. The indictment also accused the couple of endangering Emma and her three siblings through excessive forced exercise and inappropriate discipline. More charges are possible, according to the Justice Department.

Delaware State Police say 42-year-old Jean Steiner of Lewes was driving Thursday night when her car veered off New Road just west of Old Orchard Road in Lewes. When Steiner tried to get back on the roadway, her car flipped and landed in the middle of the road on its roof. Milton pianist Mark Gratton is healing after New Year s Eve shooting

He was taken to Beebe Healthcare and given anesthesia so doctors could operate.   “Next thing I know, I wake up and I have just about 30 staples up and down my middle, and a bandage over my middle,” Gratton said. “They told me my whole abdomen wall on the right side is gone, but as I progress, it will build back up.”  Now, the staples are gone. Gratton still has a small hole in his abdomen he said is getting smaller every day. He is not in any pain.  Gratton is recovering at his girlfriend’s house in Lincoln. He’s able to walk, even jog a bit, and tries to take two or three walks a day. He is able to drive and goes to the grocery store. He does housework like taking out the trash and doing the dishes.

She went to the trunk of her car and retrieved a shotgun, firing birdshot into his abdomen, according to Gratton.
