Foundation launches Volunteers in Action

This county-wide portal is purpose-built to make volunteering simple for community members and nonprofit organizations. Community members can use the portal to find and sign up to participate in volunteer opportunities and organizations who align with their personal values, skills and interests. Local nonprofit organizations and other organizations who need volunteers can sign up with the Community Foundation to participate in the portal. Volunteers In Action as a concept was identified as a part of the Envision Chaffee County process as one of the forty-plus projects that could have deep impact toward the common good. Pairing this initial identification with input from its Food Access Cohort grantees over the summer of 2020, the Foundation’s board committed to researching, identifying, and hosting the appropriate cloud-based technology solution to make VIAChaffee available to the Chaffee community.

Rescued cat found in chimney

The young black cat was recently discovered hiding in a house chimney during an inspection. She was rescued and brought to Ark-Valley Humane Society, covered in soot and ash and very dehydrated. AVHS operations manager Jonny Sandoval said the staff at the shelter estimated she was less than a year old and probably feral, although she reacts well to caretakers. The circumstances of where she was found earned her the name Soots. After cleaning her up and treating her dehydration, the staff noticed something else was going on with Soots when she partially gave birth to a stillborn kitten. Further examination revealed there was another kitten waiting to be born.

State board of health invites Carlstrom into membership

Public Health Director Andrea Carlstrom told commissioners Monday, during the Chaffee County work session, that she has been asked to be on the state board of health. Carlstrom said she had a meeting with the state this week to find out more of what that would entail, and said it was quite an honor. She delivered a report to the commissioners, meeting as the county board of health, detailing the most recent COVID-19 vaccination rates. Chaffee County was recently fifth in the state for total doses of COVID-19 administered to county residents per 100,000 people. The board also heard a Department of Human Services report from Dave Henson of Child Protective services.
