Olympic baseball qualifying in West Palm Beach, St. Lucie

The United States’ delayed second chance at qualifying for the Olympic baseball tournament has been moved to the spring training home of the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals and the exhibition ballpark of the New York Mets.
The Baseball Americas Qualifier will be played on the east coast of Florida in West Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie from May 31 to June 5, the World Baseball Softball Confederation said Tuesday.
The tournament originally was scheduled for March 22-26, 2020, in Surprise and Tempe, Arizona, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

NEW YORK Mike Scioscia has accomplished quite a bit during his 45 years in professional baseball. Besides being one of the best defensive catchers in MLB during the 1980s, Scioscia won two World Series titles as a player (’81 and ‘88) with the Dodgers and one as manager of the Angels (2002).
Scioscia added to his impressive resume recently by being named manager of Team USA. Scioscia hopes to guide the team to a berth in the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer. Winning the gold medal is in Scioscia’s sites.
“It’s a great feeling [to be named manager of Team USA],” Scioscia said via telephone. “Everyone who had the opportunity before me has the same sentiment of putting [on] that jersey that says ‘USA.’ I know everyone connected this year will have that same sentiment. I’m excited about it. It’s something I’m looking forward to.

North Korea became the first country to drop out of the Tokyo Olympics because of coronavirus fears, a decision that underscores the challenges facing Japan as it struggles to stage a global sporting event amid a raging pandemic.
A website run by North Korea’s Sports Ministry said its national Olympic Committee during a meeting on March 25 decided not to participate in the Games to protect athletes from the “world public health crisis caused by COVID-19.”

(Reuters) – Mike Scioscia, who won World Series both as a player and manager, was named manager of the U.S. men’s national baseball team on Tuesday, as they seek a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.
After 19 seasons as manager of the Anaheim Angels, guiding them to their only World Series win in 2002, Scioscia will make his international coaching debut in June when the United States hosts the Baseball Americas Qualifier in Florida.
For the tournament the U.S. will be grouped with the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Nicaragua in Pool A while Canada, Colombia, Cuba, and Venezuela will make up Pool B.
