Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaiser Permanente shifted its focus from volunteering to providing grants. This year, the company is awarding $500,000 to five nonprofits across Colorado to aid in advancing racial equity and addressing systemic racism. Just last month, with the coronavirus pandemic gutting jobs and slashing the family’s incomes, that money was used for something more pressing: rent. “Sometimes, you got to do what you got to do,” Velez said. “For now, we’re looking at the short-term goal, which is to make sure we have what the kids need.” Across the Pikes Peak region and Colorado, people are scrambling to pay rent and stay off the streets dipping into retirement savings, moving in with relatives and frantically searching for the few remaining job openings still available. But many experts say those measures can only go so far, and over the next few months, thousands of people could lose their apartments and houses to eviction without more financial help or flexibility from landlords.

The city was facing hundreds of millions of dollars in fines, but the agencies agreed to negotiate a settlement. “I’m pleased to say that, absent some very unforeseen circumstances, the judge will be signing off on that settlement … before the first of the year,” Suthers says.

The event was sponsored by Pikes Peak United way and Care and Share Food Bank. 580 families were provided with food boxes and some extra goodies for the holidays. United Way said these food distribution events have provided 750,000 pounds of food to 20,000 families in Colorado Springs since January.
