El Paso County update on COVID vaccine for seniors 70+
EL PASO COUNTY (KRDO) For the more than 65,000 seniors who are 70 years old and older, El Paso County is actively vaccinating them as quickly as vaccines are received from the state.
There is a limited supply of vaccines, but El Paso County expects to receive increased doses from the state in the coming weeks.
Based on the need to provide two doses to each of the approximately 65,000 people 70 and older in the county, the process will likely take at least through the end of February.

COLORADO SPRINGS â For many years, Kaiser Permanente has honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., by volunteering on MLK Day at dozens of nonprofits across the stateâproviding hundreds of employees and physicians to help.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaiser Permanente shifted its focus from volunteering to providing grants. This year, the company is awarding $500,000 to five nonprofits across Colorado to aid in advancing racial equity and addressing systemic racism. One of those organizations is right here in Colorado SpringsâPikes Peak United Way.
The modest retirement account belonging to Samantha Velez’s family has been reset to zero.
Just last month, with the coronavirus pandemic gutting jobs and slashing the family’s incomes, that money was used for something more pressing: rent.
“Sometimes, you got to do what you got to do,” Velez said. “For now, we’re looking at the short-term goal, which is to make sure we have what the kids need.”
Across the Pikes Peak region and Colorado, people are scrambling to pay rent and stay off the streets dipping into retirement savings, moving in with relatives and frantically searching for the few remaining job openings still available. But many experts say those measures can only go so far, and over the next few months, thousands of people could lose their apartments and houses to eviction without more financial help or flexibility from landlords.
That item was resolution of the stormwater litigation against the city.
Three years ago, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, along with several other agencies, sued the city over violations of the Clean Water Act. The suit alleged the city had failed to require developers to install stormwater runoff controls.
The agencies won a partial judgment in November 2018 in U.S. District Court. The city was facing hundreds of millions of dollars in fines, but the agencies agreed to negotiate a settlement.
âIâm pleased to say that, absent some very unforeseen circumstances, the judge will be signing off on that settlement ⦠before the first of the year,â Suthers says.
Food giveaway provides meals for nearly 600 Colorado Springs families

COLORADO SPRINGS â Wednesday, the Colorado Springs Conservancy broke out the Christmas carols at a food giveaway at Mitchell High School.
The event was sponsored by Pikes Peak United way and Care and Share Food Bank.
580 families were provided with food boxes and some extra goodies for the holidays.
United Way said these food distribution events have provided 750,000 pounds of food to 20,000 families in Colorado Springs since January.
