Cub Scouts Troop Founded During Pandemic Participates In First Pinewood Derby

By: Ashlyn Brothers TULSA, Okla. - Cub Scouts with Troop 1921 spent the day making new memories while taking part in a tradition. The Greenwood group said there s a lot more than luck that goes into wood car racing. The Pinewood Derby is a longstanding tradition for Cub Scouts across the country. For many troops, the global health crisis caused last year s racing event to come to a screeching halt. However, Troop 1921, which was founded during the pandemic, said the vaccine rollout has given these scouts an opportunity to move forward this year with their inaugural derby. I m super excited, scout Tyrus Walker said.

Remembering Bill Beard - The Montpelier Bridge

When I drive from Waterbury to Middlesex on Route 2, my eye is often drawn to a log cabin on steroids, the home of the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Then I remember Bill Beard and his passion for scouting. Bill died in February at the age of 77. His obituary in the Times Argus mentioned his stint as the gas-pumping Santa at the Sunoco station in Montpelier, his commitment to announcing at Mountaineers baseball games, and to church and community organizations. Besides his family, however, Bill’s big passion was scouting.

BTV becomes bigger, better

WATERLOO â The âBâ in BTV stands for âBaron,â but this school year, it also could represent âbetterâ and âbigger.â DeKalb High Schoolâs television channel now offers more programming, and it is reaching far more viewers through Auburn Essential Services. BTV programs now are available to all internet users, free of charge, at auburnessentialservices.net through the Your Community Network platform. It also may be viewed by AES video subscribers on Channels 10 and 22. Until last fall, âAES had a platform, but nothing to put on it,â and the school had programming, but needed a place to show it, said Jed Freels, instructor for the BTV class at DeKalb High School.
