Derrick Bryant, 37, died on Friday while in custody at the Boyd County Detention Center. Bryant has previously been listed as being from Flatwoods, but Hensley said he has moved around some in the area, and much of his family resides in Huntington. The cause of Bryant’s death is self-strangulation, according to Hensley. Bryant was not alone in his cell when he took his own life at around 6 p.m. on Friday, but his cell mate was taking a nap and was unaware of what was happening. Bryant was not on suicide watch, Hensley said. “When an inmate comes in, we ask them questions and ask if they’re suicidal, and ask them a lot of different questions,” Hensley said. “Then they go to medical and they’re asked again if they’re suicidal.”
