Prof Lourens Marthinus du Plessis who cowrote draft Constitution, Bill of Rights dies

North West University The accomplished legal academic died of natural causes on Saturday, surrounded by family at his home in Johannesburg. Among many of his accomplishments, Du Plessis was part of a team that worked with the now President Cyril Ramaphosa and produced the country s draft Constitution in 1996 and the Bill of Rights. Du Plessis is survived by his wife, three daughters and six grandchildren and his sister. Professor Lourens Marthinus du Plessis, well-known legal academic and cowriter of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, has died. A research professor at the North West University, Du Plessis was a gentle giant and a peacemaker during the turbulent period of political transition in South Africa, said Leon Wessels a former minister in the National Party.
