CHULA VISTA, CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond joined elementary students for class Thursday on two campuses in San Diego County which have stayed open for in-person learning by implementing safety measures and offering supports for students and families.
Thurmond visited Castle Park Elementary and Joseph Casillas Elementary, both located in Chula Vista, an area among the hardest hit by the pandemic.
The schools are two of the 49 schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District, which serves nearly 30,000 students. The district s student body has 68% identified as Hispanic and 36% as English learners. For the first time ever, nearly 95% of California families say their kids have personal computing devices that they can use for school. But even after a year of distance learning, thousands of students still don’t have a computer or access to the internet at home.

Several county schools were among those earning recognition in the state’s Civic Learning Awards, which honor achievements in civic engagement in the classroom.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond co-sponsor the award program, now in its ninth year. They hosted a virtual meeting with the top schools recently.
“I’m so proud of these schools for keeping students engaged in civic learning during a pandemic, especially as our country grapples with serious social and civic conversations and actions that can reimagine governance at all levels,” Thurmond said in a statement.
Cloud Campus in the Encinitas Union School District was among 32 California schools to receive the top-level Civic Learning Award of Excellence. Cloud Campus is a distance-learning option that integrates civics lessons into elementary classrooms. It was offered in 2020 to 430 students.
