The Oklahoma State Board of Education reported having evidence of the destruction of paper documents belonging to the Western Heights School District Wednesday, as the state engages in a yearlong intervention plan to get the district back on track.
In a decision this week, the district’s 90-day suspension was extended for a year, and the board of education proceeded with its intervention plan by first implementing an interim superintendent.
According to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister, the Western Heights District has been unwilling to comply with the interference of the state.
‘OSDE takes this opportunity to again remind the District that its actions in refusing to comply may be illegal, and result in the imposition of personal and criminal liability on District leaders,” a written document on behalf of OSDE said in part.

Oklahoma schools are excited to get kids back into the classroom, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said.
In Oklahoma, school administrators are severely limited on what mitigation strategies they are able to mandate after the passing of a senate bill this spring, Hofmeister said.
“We certainly are talking with schools, and as the school year starts, we have a new law in place that was passed in the final days of the legislative session,” said Hofmeister.
Senate Bill 658, which took effect July 2, allows districts to only instate mask mandates if there is a local or state emergency order. The bill also doesn’t allow vaccines to be mandated.
The State Board of Education named a new interim superintendent for Western Heights Public Schools Tuesday.
This is just the first step, following the board’s unanimous vote Monday to takeover decision-making for the district.
Guthrie will function as a liaison between the district and the state as they work to get the district back in compliance.
The probationary process is a rare step that the state Board of Education uses to get schools back in line with what their supposed to be doing.
Western Heights isn t the only district on probation.
Executive director of accreditation Ryan Pieper said Sovereign Community School and Oologah-Talala are also having to make changes to save their schools this year.
