LOS ANGELES, CA Los Angeles County reported its highest-ever single-day total of COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, a grim record attributable to a combination of backlogged reporting and a surge of people dying of the coronavirus. Hundreds more are expected to die in the coming days pushing Los Angeles County past the 10,000 death-mark.
The county Department of Public Health confirmed 227 coronavirus- related fatalities Tuesday. Long Beach, which has its own health department separate from the county, also reported a single-day high number of deaths Tuesday, 22, but indicated the number reflects a two-day total dating back to Sunday. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said Monday officials were working to confirm more than 400 deaths likely attributable to the virus deaths that weren t initially tallied due to the holiday weekend and a Spectrum internet outage that impacted reporting. Some of those fatalities were included in Tuesday s county report, but DPH officials said the agency anticipates confirming additional deaths due to the backlog of death reports over the next two to three days.
The deaths averaging one every 10 to 15 minutes in the county are the result of a surge in cases that began in November and worsened dramatically after a spate of Thanksgiving holiday gatherings and will likely be exacerbated by Christmas and New Year s gatherings held in spite of health orders barring them.

LOS ANGELES, CA Nursing homes across Los Angeles began receiving the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine Tuesday as part of a frantic effort to protect the region s most vulnerable residents from the coronavirus.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, in partnership with the city of Los Angeles and public health startup Curative deployed the vaccine to 59 facilities Tuesday and with plans to get the vaccine to 339 Skilled Nursing Facilities in Los Angeles County by the end of the week.
