Pittsfield Health Subcommittee Asks for Update on GE Cancer Study

PITTSFIELD, Mass. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency say the capped of General Electric landfills are not harmful, yet the last public health study that was conducted in relation to them was in 2008. After receiving a presentation about environmental monitoring activities from the problematic landfills that abut Allendale Elementary School, the City Council s Public Health and Safety subcommittee requested that the state Department of Public Health provide an updated study on cancer cases in that area. The committee was shocked to find out that a study of this nature has not been conducted since 2008, while Hill 78 and Building 71 were capped and have not been in use for over 10 years. Since the GE Housatonic Public Health Assessment was released in 2008, there have no further evaluations of cancer incidents in the Allendale area.

And sure enough, test results received last week contained the highest concentration of particles of SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus, of any test since the city began monitoring sewage for the virus over the summer, according to Ricardo Morales, commissioner of Public Services and Utilities. A test kit consists of three vials and some ice packs for sewage samples to be sent to a lab for the novel coronavirus RNA.

Pittsfield Public Health Committee Informed on Opioid Use Disorder

It bothers me in this day and age, why we don t have a larger resource of avenues for individuals. I don t know if that comes from lack of funding from the Commonwealth or if it comes from lack of funding from the federal government, Ward 7 City Councilor Anthony Maffuccio said at Thursday s meeting. We have a serious problem, and people just don t want to talk about it and they think it is just going to go away miraculously one day.   Responding to Ward 1 Councilor Helen Moon s petition that requested a presentation on opioid use,  Jennifer Kimball, coordinator of Berkshire Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative, informed the City Council subcommittee about the city s current issues with OUD.
