Two Additional Malibu Residents Killed by COVID-19, Bringing Total Victims To Five

COVID-19 has killed two additional Malibu residents, according to data provided by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Wednesday, Dec. 16, bringing the total number of local victims up to five.  The first local death caused by COVID-19 was reported in April 2020, just weeks after the disease was first reported in Malibu. Two additional deaths were recorded over the summer. The identities of the two most recent virus victims were not available. Of Malibu’s five victims, only the identity of the first—longtime resident John Bell—had been released publicly. From USA TODAY Network and wire reports Alabama Montgomery: Almost $2 million in grant money from coronavirus relief funds is assisting veterans who are being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder and directly affected by COVID-19. The money announced by Gov. Kay Ivey’s office will help fund four weeks of virtual group therapy for people in 11 counties. Veterans will have virtual, hourlong meetings three times a week to help them deal with PTSD and stresses from the pandemic. Sixty veterans already are enrolled in the program, which is run by Priority Soldier, a nonprofit group that assists veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Services are available in counties including Calhoun, Coffee, Dallas, Lauderdale, Lowndes, Macon, Madison, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Walker.

As of Saturday, nearly 17,400 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infections more than double the previous peak reached in July and a state model that uses current data to forecast future trends shows the number could reach 75,000 by mid-January. More than 3,600 confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients were in intensive care units. All of Southern California and the 12-county San Joaquin Valley to the north have exhausted their regular intensive care unit capacity, and some hospitals have begun using “surge” space. Overall, the state’s ICU capacity was just 2% on Saturday.
