If one were to ask what has driven her lifelong passion for storytelling and visual arts, Querida Sidney’s response would be clear and confident; her belief that the simple act of telling a story can be a radical tool for transforming the world.
Having grown up in the Bronx, Sidney recalled being quite a busy and studious child. Much of her time was split between after-school tutoring and club activities at the Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem, as well as involvement in various organizations such as Step Up and Girls, Inc. She also strived to keep herself surrounded by people who shared her mindset and passion for social engagement.

Three first-generation students studying communication at The University of Texas at Arlington have won scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $4,000, from Hispanic Communicators DFW (HCDFW).
The winning UTA students are Krissiha Lagos, Iridiana Barcenas and Rocio Hernandez.
“The Department of Communication is grateful for the ongoing support that Hispanic Communicators DFW provides to students in majors across our department,” said Charla Markham Shaw, department chair and associate professor. “We are deeply appreciative of the value our partnerships with professional organizations such as HCDFW that contribute to the academic experience our students have during their time as communication majors at UTA and after graduation.”

The Bateman Competition is PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) ’s national case study competition where students create and implement a full public relations campaign. This year, the goal is to help the Public Relations Society of America to reverse the corrosion of civility in American life and encourage respectful conversations in public discourse in all corners of society.
