Zephyr Teachout, Former Cuomo Opponent, Thinks the Time is Ripe for a Serious Challenge to Governor
On 2/18/21 at 11:55 AM EST
In a year, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo went from a potential presidential candidate to facing rebukes from his own party and Zephyr Teachout, his 2014 democratic challenger, sees the current revolt as a ripe opportunity for someone to mount a serious campaign against him in the 2022 primary.
Cuomo s handily beat those who mount primary challenges against him and poll numbers indicate a year into the pandemic, a majority of New Yorkers approve of the job he s doing. But the onslaught of attacks over how he handled nursing home deaths from members of his own party is a problem that s likely to follow him to the primary.

ALBANY The long-standing practice of state agencies to secretly use their administrative subpoena authority to sift the personal records of employees in internal investigations was struck down by a state Supreme Court justice in a ruling that found the State Police were not adhering to the provisions of Public Officers Law.
The ruling by state Supreme Court Justice Patrick J. McGrath was handed down in a case filed in December 2019 by the New York State Police Investigators Association, which challenged the State Police practice of using subpoenas to access the smartphone, personal email and other private records of employees without their knowledge during internal investigations.
Five things to watch in the District 24 special
It’s finally here – the first New York City election of 2021 and the first of the ranked-choice voting era – and even if you’ve never heard the word Pomonok, the Council District 24 special election in Eastern Queens could set the tone for this whole season. Here are five burning questions we’ll be looking to answer once the polls close at 9 p.m.
How many voters will rank?
In San Francisco’s first ranked-choice voting election in 2004, nearly a quarter of voters said they only voted for one candidate and didn’t rank – and that was after an $800,000 outreach campaign. Conventional wisdom says that fewer voters ranking would be good news for James Gennaro, the one white candidate, since six of his competitors of South Asian descent might be targeting the same voters. Another question – given the snow and the cold and the lackluster early voting numbers – is how many people will vote at all.
