February 16, 2021 - WASHINGTON Last week, Congressman Josh Harder (CA-10) reintroduced the bipartisan, bicameral Stopping Doctor Shortages Act to close a loophole in federal
regulations that prevents doctors in California and Texas from qualifying for student loan repayment programs. Rep. Harder introduced the bill alongside Reps. Van Taylor, Obernolte and Castro in the House and Sens. Feinstein and Cornyn in the Senate. The California Medical Association (CMA) estimates the bill could bring 10,000 physicians to the state over the next decade.

SALT LAKE CITY As a presidential candidate, Democrat Joe Biden vowed to forgive at least $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower, which could eliminate loans for some 16 million people more than a third of current borrowers.
This past week, members of President-elect’s Biden’s transition team said that as soon as he takes office, he will extend suspension of federal student loan payments put into place in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For student loan borrowers, 2020 was an unprecedented year, but 2021 could bring with it even more striking changes.
In response to the Covid-19 crisis, federal student loan borrowers received a government-mandated pause on their payments starting last March, which is set to last through January. Now that Joe Biden has been elected president and economic uncertainty remains, debate about long-discussed, broad-based student loan cancellation has become inescapable.
Although Biden has said repeatedly he favors $10,000 in federal student loan forgiveness, he offered no forgiveness plan, or any other college-related aid for that matter, when he announced a $1.9 trillion stimulus package on Thursday.
