Pitching in: PNM makes donation to balloon crash families

Public Service Company of New Mexico will make a $100,000 donation to the families of the victims of the fatal June 26 ballooning crash in Albuquerque, according to a company release. The hot air balloon crash killed five people: Pilot Nick Meleski and passengers Susan and John Montoya and Mary and Martin Martinez. PNM will gift the money directly to the victims’ families, and will not use customer dollars in the donation. “The families will decide where they want to use the money, whether it be to offset funeral planning expenses, medical, or other related expenses,” the release said.

(Eddie Moore/Journal) SANTA FE  New Mexico’s largest electric utility is working to bring a unit at San Juan Generating Station back online after the recent collapse of a cooling tower caused it to be knocked off the grid. Public Service Company of New Mexico spokesman Ray Sandoval said in a statement no one was injured by the June 30 cooling tower collapse at the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station and an investigation as to the cause of the incident is underway.

FARMINGTON – If a cooling tower falls at the San Juan Generating Station, will anyone talk about it? Public Service Company of New Mexico would not, for a while, but the state did. Then the utility offered a statement briefly explaining what happened. Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) spokesman Ray Sandoval initially had no comment July 8 on a published report that a cooling tower fell last month and the unit went offline, but late in the afternoon the utility relented. Normally, we don’t comment on ongoing operational issues; however, we feel it is important to provide an accurate statement due to some apparent misinformation, PNM s July 8 statement said. On June 30th, an incident occurred at the San Juan generating station where a cooling tower collapsed.
