The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) announced this April that they will invest about $1.6 billion in 2021 “to address critical deferred maintenance projects and improve transportation and recreation infrastructure in national parks, national wildlife refuges and recreation areas, and at Bureau of Indian Education schools.” Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and other public land areas in Wyoming are slated to see around $184 million in funding for various projects. It is estimated that the investment will support as many as 18,851 jobs and contribute $2 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2021.

Michigan’s sprawling Huron-Manistee National Forests will be undertaking a few local projects in 2021, including replacing bridges along portions of the North Country Trail and improving river access for anglers and paddlers. The projects are part of a $285 million investment made possible by the new National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund, established in 2020 by the Great American Outdoors Act. According to the USDA Forest Service, these funds will support more than 500 infrastructure improvement projects essential to the enjoyment of national forests and grasslands, while reducing the Forest Service’s $5.9 billion deferred maintenance backlog.
