Public security minister names Border Police commander as police chief nominee

Follow Dec. 15, 2020 Public Security Minister Amir Ohana announced Tuesday that he is recommending that Border Police commander, Maj. Gen. Kobi Shabtai, be appointed police commissioner. Shabtai, 56, was not considered a frontrunner for the position in past weeks, and the recommendation comes as a surprise. The appointment is dependent on approval for the committee for senior appointments and from the cabinet. Shabtai has commanded the Border Police for the past four years, and it is his first role as major general. He has not served as a district commander, which is considered a gateway position in the Israel Police. Despite this, he has extensive command experience, and Ohana was impressed at his handling of the Sharon region, one of the police s largest, among other things.
