Several senior officers in the Israel Police are reportedly planning on hanging up their handcuffs and leaving the force in protest of Public Security Minister Amir Ohana’s Tuesday announcement that he had nominated Border Police chief Yaakov (Kobi) Shabtai to serve as the next commissioner of police.
In addition to interim police chief Motti Cohen’s subsequent announcement that he would resign from the post within days, three other top police officers Jerusalem District Commander Doron Yadid, Tel Aviv District Commander David Bitan and Deputy Commissioner Alon Asor are also planning on resigning, the Kan public broadcaster reported.

Public Security Minister Amir Ohana announced Tuesday that he is recommending that Border Police commander, Maj. Gen. Kobi Shabtai, be appointed police commissioner.
Shabtai, 56, was not considered a frontrunner for the position in past weeks, and the recommendation comes as a surprise.
The appointment is dependent on approval for the committee for senior appointments and from the cabinet.
Shabtai has commanded the Border Police for the past four years, and it is his first role as major general. He has not served as a district commander, which is considered a gateway position in the Israel Police. Despite this, he has extensive command experience, and Ohana was impressed at his handling of the Sharon region, one of the police s largest, among other things.

Facing pressure from the attorney general, Public Security Minister Amir Ohana announced Tuesday that he has nominated Border Police chief Yaakov (Kobi) Shabtai to serve as the next Israel Police commissioner, ending a two-year impasse.
In addition, Ohana said the current head of the Israel Prisons Service’s southern district, Katy Perry, will serve as the next chief of the IPS. She will be the second woman to lead the organization.
Both Shabtai and Perry’s appointments are subject to the approval of the government’s senior appointments committee as well as the cabinet.

Last Friday, Israeli occupation forces shot dead 13-year-old Palestinian boy Ali Abu Alia during a protest against the construction of an Israeli settlement in the village of Al-Mughayyir, north of the West Bank city of Ramallah.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that Ali was shot with live rounds in the stomach. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that Ali was admitted to hospital in critical condition and later tragically succumbed to his wounds.
The harrowing killing of the Palestinian child was widely condemned with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov tweeting: Appalled by the killing of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy (13 according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health), Ali Abu Alia, near Ramallah today.
