Les Leyne: Court says effort to push out lawyers in ICBC cases is unconstitutional

After dwelling at length during the NDP’s first term about the disgraceful state in which they found ICBC’s finances, Eby came up with a barrage of reforms. One of them was to shunt the lawyers out of the picture when it came to “minor” injury claims from car crashes. He announced they were going to replace the whole expensive bunch of them with the Civil Resolution Tribunal. It’s a group of lay people appointed by government to handle smaller-scale disputes. As he told the legislature: “The goal… is to get minor injury disputes and minor motor vehicle matters resolved quickly, efficiently and proportionally….to get the administrative costs down… and to have them resolved without a bunch of legal expenses on both sides so that the money actually goes to accident victims.”

B C places temporary 15% cap on fees for food delivery services

The B.C. government has announced a temporary cap on delivery fees to help restaurants and hospitality businesses struggling with high costs during the pandemic. Effective Dec. 27, food delivery service providers must not charge a restaurant more than 15 per cent of the total cost of the customer order, before taxes, for delivery services. To make sure that delivery companies don’t shift their costs or charge restaurants under different fees, an additional five per cent cap of the total meal cost, before taxes, has been introduced for other related services, such as online ordering and processing fees. The order comes from the creation of an Emergency Program Act order from the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to help restaurants that have been struggling for months to keep up with high fees charged by third-party food delivery companies.

ICBC auto insurance renewals going online in 2022

ICBC auto insurance renewals going online in 2022 SHARE ON: Less than two years to go until drivers across B.C. can renew auto insurance at their fingertips. ICBC says its new online model is set to launch in May of 2022. It will allow customers to renew personal insurance and get temporary operation permits, with some restrictions, all online. More products are expected to be made available in the future. “We know British Columbians want more convenience when they purchase and renew their auto insurance,” says Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. “This is another important step to make ICBC work better for British Columbians.”
