The police officer who fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, the city s police chief said Monday.

Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police released bodycam video of the deadly Daunte Wright shooting Monday. A police chief in Brooklyn Center outside of Minneapolis released the body camera footage Monday showing the officer-involved shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, categorizing the event as an accidental discharge. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believed the so far unidentified officer intended to reach for a Taser but mistakenly grabbed her service weapon and deployed a single bullet. Both the chief and Mayor Mike Elliott declined to release the officer s name at this time but said the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension should be releasing information about all involved parties soon.

Deadly police shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center leads to protests, looting By FOX 9 Staff BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (FOX 9) - A man died Sunday after he was shot by police and then shortly after involved in a vehicle crash in Brooklyn Center, the police department reports. Law enforcement did not confirm the victim s identity Sunday, but protesters were calling for justice in the death of a man named Daunte Wright during demonstrations.  More information on the shooting is expected to be released at an 11 a.m. news conference, streaming at fox9.com/live. Upon learning of the death, protesters gathered at the scene before moving to Brooklyn Center s Police Headquarters where they faced tear gas and flash bangs from law enforcement seeking to control the crowd. After midnight, Mayor Mike Elliot announced a 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday curfew in the city.
