State Patrol Hasn’t Added More Troopers To Monitor Roads In 16 years, Top DPS Official Says

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) Minnesota needs more State Patrol troopers on its highways to curb speeding and fatal crashes, Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington told lawmakers Tuesday. He asked the legislature to provide funding to hire more troopers to patrol state roads, which hasn’t happened in more than a decade.
This comes as traffic fatalities are on the rise, according to the department. As of Monday, there were 114 reported deaths, which is an increase from the 89 recorded at the same point in 2020. And the deadliest time for road travel during the summer months is only just beginning.

A CNN producer was detained for hours and asked if she spoke English while covering protests in Brooklyn Center last week, according to an April 17 letter, signed by several media outlets, sent to Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials.
CNN producer Carolyn Sung, an Asian American, was arrested April 13 by State Troopers while she was trying to leave the area after officials issued a dispersal order, the letter says. The troopers grabbed Sung by her backpack and threw her to the ground, zip-tying her hands behind her back.

Closing arguments are underway on Monday in the trial of Derek Chauvin amid heightened safety concerns after a National Guard and MinneapolisPolice Department neighborhood security team was fired upon over the weekend in a drive-by shooting.
Attorneys from both sides are seeking to distill three weeks of testimony in order to convince jurors to acquit or convict Chauvin on second- and third-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Jurors in Hennepin County District Court first began hearing testimony in the case on March 29.
