PROVIDENCE A renewed investigation into a 10-year-old murder resulted in the arrest this week in Texas of a former North Attleboro man, Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced Friday. Jason Lopes, 33, stabbed Zackary Marshall to death outside a bar on Peck Street during the early morning hours of Dec. 18, 2010, the statewide grand jury charged in an indictment unsealed this week, according to Neronha spokeswoman Kristy dosReis. Lopes was arrested several days ago in Garland, Texas, on a warrant. As of Friday afternoon, he was in custody in Texas, awaiting rendition to Rhode Island, dosReis said.

(YESMIN ASENCIO)Yesmin Asencio PROVIDENCE The state Department of Children, Youth, and Families said Friday that neglect contributed to the deaths of two young sisters from a house fire just before Christmas. Allison Sandoval, 7, and 2-year-old Ashley were home with other extended family at 10 Lucy St. when a fire broke out mid-afternoon on Dec. 22. The other relatives escaped, then realized the girls were still inside.

5 Providence men indicted in scheme to buy, resell 89 handguns

Mangum is accused of buying guns from dealers in Providence, Woonsocket, Warwick, Cranston and North Kingstown, according to Neronha. These four Providence men are alleged to have conspired with Mangun or solicited him to buy handguns: Brady Robinson, 27; Yovaniell Sostre, 25; Anthony Jaiman, 28; and Wascar Rivas, 25. Mangum, Robinson, and Rivas will be scheduled for arraignment in Providence County Superior Court. Jaiman was arraigned Thursday in Providence County Superior Court. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Sostre. The indictments resulted from a multi-agency investigation that included the Providence police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; and the attorney general s office, officials said.

Boston man charged in 2011 Providence killing

PROVIDENCE  A Providence County grand jury has indicted a Boston man already serving time for a double homicide in the 2011 cold case death of 23-year-old Steven Latimer. Nigel A. Nichols, 35, formerly of Boston s Mattapan neighborhood, is facing 10 counts related to the fatal shooting of Latimer and wounding of several others early Oct. 2, 2011, outside a Providence nightclub. Nichols is charged with one count each of of murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence resulting in death, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, and illegal possession of a firearm. In addition, he faces three counts each of assault with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence resulting in injury.
