UK singled out for care home deaths and assault on right to protest – Amnesty report on global inequality

Workers Revolutionary Party Black Lives Matter campaigners on one of the many marches across the UK against the Police Crime and Sentencing Bill ‘CORONAVIRUS has exposed global inequality, and leaders have ramped up attacks on human rights,’ so concludes the Amnesty International Report 2020/21 released today, which says global inequality has been ‘brutally exposed’ by the Pandemic. The rights organisation’s new Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, has called for a ‘reset and reboot’ of the United Nations (UN) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) and has singled the UK out over its high Covid death rate, its scandal of care home deaths and its assault on the right to protest.

Nigeria recorded over 3,600 rape cases during COVID-19 lockdown

Over 3,600 cases of rape were recorded across Nigeria during the period of lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, according to Amnesty International. Many states in the country placed restrictions on non-essential activities starting March and started easing them in May in a bid to contain COVID-19 that has infected over 133 million people globally. The lockdown was noted to have aggravated incidents of gender-based violence and sexual assault, across the world, with women and children the most affected victims. Amnesty did not elaborate on the over 3,600 rape cases in Nigeria, but quoted official statistics . The organisation said in a report, titled Amnesty International Report 2020/21: The State of the World s Human Rights, published on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 that the pandemic hit those shackled by oppression hardest thanks to decades of inequalities, neglect and abuse.

Amnesty Report 2020: Global inequality brutally exposed by pandemic

Amnesty’s 408-page report –  Amnesty’s report shows how those already most marginalised – including women and refugees – have borne the devastating brunt of the pandemic. Health workers, migrant workers and those in the informal sector – many on the pandemic’s frontlines – have also been betrayed by neglected health systems and inadequate economic and social support. The pandemic worsened the already precarious situation for refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants, said Amnesty, trapping many in squalid camps. Amnesty’s report also highlights a marked increase in gender-based and domestic violence, with many women and LGBTI people facing increased barriers to protection and support due to restrictions on freedom of movement and lack of confidential mechanisms for victims to report violence while isolated with their abusers.
