Amnesty International USA is calling on the Biden administration to cease its “outdated and destructive” policy of developing and deploying antipersonnel landmines. The statement was issued after the Pentagon confirmed this week the U.S. would not change its position on landmines. One hundred sixty-four countries have signed on to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty; the U.S. is not one of them. Over 2,000 people were killed in 2019 by antipersonnel mines.

Former President Donald Trump spent four years inflicting untold damage to the rights of immigrants, including people seeking safety in this country. As asylum seekers came to the United States to flee violence and persecution, the Trump administration detained upwards of 50,000 people (a figure Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed), prolonged the detention of families and exercised authority over a system that saw an uptick in deaths in detention which the House Oversight Committee determined was often due to inadequate medical care.

Today, President Biden announced the American Jobs Plan, calling on Congress to pass a $12 billion investment in workers facing significant challenges. Part of this $12 billion investment includes $5 billion over eight years in support of evidence-based community violence prevention programs. In a statement, Ernest Coverson, the End Gun Violence Campaign Manager at Amnesty International USA, said:
“We applaud President Biden’s historic decision to take a critical step toward ending gun violence, which affects numerous communities across the country. Supporting funding of community-based programs, represents a victory for Amnesty International USA and the many partner and front-line organizations that have been pushing for this type of action. This year the “Invest in Us” coalition came together with a goal to secure federal funding to address gun violence, and in less than a month, the Biden Administration listened.

Amnesty International USA released the following statement after reports emerged of a mass shooting in Orange, California, which reportedly left four people dead and two others injured. The shooting occurred just hours after President Joe Biden allocated $5 billion out of his $12 billion American Jobs Plan to support evidence-based community violence prevention programs.
Ernest Coverson, the End Gun Violence Campaign Manager at Amnesty International USA, said:
“Today, many Americans woke up to news of yet another mass shooting, where one victim was reported to be a small child. Once again, we’re reminded that gun violence doesn’t discriminate, and robs children, families and entire communities of all the possibilities their futures may hold.
